What makes Michaels furniture special is that he exclusively uses California Redwood for his furniture, which is very beautiful and also eco friendly. The Redwood is farm grown, or second or third-growth Redwood acquired directly from California Cascade in Northern California. This is eco friendly and sustainable since the California Cascade manages the Redwood Forest and plants 4.5 million saplings each year. Redwood is the fastest growing crop tree in the United States and can be easily acquired from growers without harming any of our natural forests. Redwood also has aesthetic advantages in addition to its environmental ones, with its combination of beauty, warmth, durability and versatility that help make each piece unique and memorable. Additionally, Redwood is durable and naturally resistant to insects and decay and has excellent “dimensional stability,” which means that it shrinks and swells less than other woods when exposed to water.
Michael uses Tung oil to finish table sets. This oil is very special because it is organic, green and sustainable. It is made by pressing seeds from the Chinese Tung tree. Tung oil is a great binder because the sealer and finish coats basically become part of the wood, by carrying the driers and resins deep into the pores of the wood and waterproofing it. Michael experimented for many years until he found the perfect blend. The finished product is a beautiful armor like surface that will last many years in the sun.
