Newhall County Water District<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though created in 1953, Newhall County Water District\u2019s<\/strong> roots go back to the early 1900s with their predecessor company, Newhall Water System. It is governed by a five-member board of directors who are elected at large by residents of the District.<\/p>\n

As the first public water utility in the Santa Clarita Valley and one of the four water purveyors supplying a population of at least 30,000, NCWD is responsible for the distribution of or blend of State Water Project water and local groundwater wells. They will have a booth at the KHTS Home and Garden show in Santa Clarita, CA where you can visit and ask questions.<\/p>\n

Ever wonder where your drinking water<\/strong> comes from? The source includes lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, springs, reservoirs, and wells. For NCWD\u2019s system, water primarily comes from the State Water Project (SWP). This system operated by the State Department of Water Resources is 660 miles of rivers, aqueducts, and reservoirs that transport water from the Sierra Nevada to the Southern California SWP contractors for use as urban or agricultural use.<\/p>\n

Extreme Drought in the Santa Clarita Valley<\/h2>\n

The Santa Clarita Valley is in an extreme drought, so NCWD has provided many helpful tips on their website to help everyone become more water efficient.<\/p>\n

Smarter water use outside the home rather than inside is the most practical for households in the desert, as they use 70-80 percent of the water for washing cars, landscaping, filling pools, and hosing driveways. Adjust irrigation use seasonally; it only takes 3-4 minutes to keep grass in the winter healthy.<\/p>\n

Change repositioning your sprinklers to make sure they are exclusively watering the grass, rather than the sidewalk. You can install sprinklers that spray flat to prevent water loss due to the wind. Consider replacing at least a portion of your grass with water-efficient landscaping. Converting an all-grass lawn to a desert landscape can result in a 70 percent reduction in water use. Lastly, sweep your driveway with a broom instead of hosing it down.<\/p>\n
