Studies have shown a correlation between overall brain health and a person\u2019s hearing, and Advanced Audiology\u2019s Nola Aronson, a Santa Clarita audiologist, is weighing in.<\/p>\n

Untreated hearing loss has been linked with Alzheimer\u2019s disease and dementia in some studies because hearing is so important in ensuring the brain remains active and stimulated, according to Aronson.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you have a hearing loss and you\u2019re missing information and your brain is not getting that information, \u2026 there\u2019s a problem,\u201d said Aronson.<\/p>\n
This has been true in Aronson\u2019s own family, as her 88-year-old mother chose not to wear her hearing aids for many years because she lived alone in New York.<\/p>\n
Aronson\u2019s family recently decided to move her mother to California, and while she began wearing her hearing aids daily once again, Aronson has seen signs of dementia that could be related to the years her mother spent lacking auditory stimulation.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s forgetting words and things like that,\u201d Aronson said. \u201cI think that has a lot to do with the fact that all the studies and the research have shown in the last two years that when you\u2019re missing information for a long period of time (it affects the brain).\u201d<\/p>\n
