What Is Involved In A Free Hearing Screening In Santa Clarita At Advanced Audiology?

Advanced Audiology

An expert on hearing from Advanced Audiology is discussing what is involved in getting a free hearing screening in Santa Clarita.

Residents can expect the screening to take about 45 minutes, and to sit in a soundproof booth where they can communicate with an audiologist, according to Steve Lettau of Advanced Audiology.

“The audiologist can go ahead and press buttons and replicate sounds, and then they have to signal when they hear a sound,” Lettau said. “If they don’t signal, then we know that they don’t hear that frequency.”

Additionally, the audiologist will have a list of words to say to the person so they can repeat what they’re hearing back.

“Sometimes they’ll miss it,” Lettau said. “We’ll say ‘hot dog’ and they’ll say ‘hamburger’ or something like that, so we know they’re not deciphering proper language.”

The results are reflected in an audiogram, which demonstrates the person’s baseline hearing and any hearing loss, Lettau noted.

Even those with good hearing are encouraged to establish their baseline through a free hearing screening in Santa Clarita, according to Lettau.

The reason for this can be seen in the story of a woman who had normal hearing, but lost it in a major car crash because of the air bags deploying. Fortunately, she had established her hearing baseline at Advanced Audiology prior to the crash.

“She went to the insurance company… They said, ‘How do we know it wasn’t pre-existing?’” Lettau said. “So she came to us and we did another baseline screening for her… We showed them the ‘before’ and ‘after’ and they settled with her. If she hadn’t come in and got just the baseline, she probably wouldn’t have gotten any settlement at all, so we encourage people to do that.”

Free hearing screenings in Santa Clarita have been available at Advanced Audiology for years, with the Santa Clarita audiologist’s goal being to increase the total number given each year.

“About three or four years ago, we did 1,500,” Lettau said. “Then we did 2,000; then we did 2,500. Now we’re shooting for 3,000 this year.”
