A Santa Clarita Orthodontist recently talked about a digital impression system called the iTero, that is more accurate and less invasive than the previous process.
Orthodontists are now able to take a highly accurate digital impression without the mess.
“The new technology completely eliminates the tray and putty impressions where the experience is comparable to stuffing a big wad of gum in your mouth,” explained Embrace Your Smile officials.
The older technique used a “goop” inserted in the mouth to create the impression. This was quite unpleasant for the patient because this putty was inserted in the mouth and it had to be held still until it hardened. It was not uncommon to have to retake impressions multiple times because they were rejected, broken, or even misplaced.

A much more accurate impression is able to be created with the iTero scanner. The patient is much more comfortable and it allows them and the orthodontist to communicate about the treatment process better because a 3D image of the teeth can be seen instantly.
“The iTero scanner digitally captures the structure of the teeth and gums using the latest optical technology,” explained an official with Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics.
A radiation-free laser scans your mouth. The scanner is a compact, hand-held wand. The scan can be started and stopped as many times as needed and takes 2 to 3 minutes to complete.
A digitally perfect 3D impression of the teeth and soft tissue structures is created.
The patient can view the process as it scans. Digital software creates a 3D model that displays right on the computer screen.
The iTero Scanner is able to be used for any orthodontic treatment that is decided on and is a remarkable improvement to the orthodontic process.
