The community is being advised by a Santa Clarita audiologist to not put off having their hearing checked, with free hearing screenings provided at her office and several local physician’s waiting rooms.
“Why do we get our eyes checked? Why do we get our teeth checked?” said Advanced Audiology’s Nola Aronson. “Why do we consider our ears being checked not important? That’s the last thing that people ever do.”

A number of people who put off having a hearing screening may do so because they make the incorrect assumption that they will need an obvious, large hearing aid that makes them feel “old” if they have a hearing loss.
“They used to be these big awful things, and they were only for what we considered ‘old’ people,” Aronson said, noting that today’s hearing devices are almost invisible and much less noticeable than most ear buds and bluetooth headsets.
Residents are advised to get a hearing screening even if they haven’t noticed any hearing problems, according to Aronson.
“Around the age of 50, we should all be considering getting a free baseline hearing screening so we know where we’re at, and then we can go from there,” she said. “We don’t want to wait until people start complaining.”
Aronson even has one patient who was able to use her baseline hearing screening as proof for her insurance company that she sustained a hearing loss in a car crash when the airbags deployed.
In addition, studies have shown that fixing a hearing loss can help keep a person active, prevent feelings of isolation and improve confidence and self esteem.
“Addressing your hearing may be one of the best things you can do to stay vibrant and maintain an active lifestyle,” said Aronson. “As you evolve into getting older, you want to have a better self.”
