“Designing a Sustainable Landscape” is slated for Thursday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m., while “Waterwise Vegetable Gardening” is planned on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9 a.m., according to officials.

Both workshops are free for community members, and the series of gardening classes in Santa Clarita is held at the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency located at 27234 Bouquet Canyon Road.

“A useful landscape is one that meets your needs,” said SCV Water officials. “Whether you’re looking for something sustainable or edible, SCV Water has free February gardening classes to suit your taste.”

Thursday’s landscape design class was made for residents interested in giving their landscape a makeover or building on a blank slate, and is set to teach participants how to be water-wise and preserve natural resources while still ensuring their landscape fits their needs, according to officials.

“Designing a Sustainable Landscape” is expected to be taught by Tim Wheeler, who has over 25 years of green industry experience with an emphasis on landscape management, landscape education and water conservation.

Throughout his career, Wheeler has obtained several licenses and certifications, including certified arborist, water use efficiency practitioner and certified landscape water auditor, the Santa Clarita water agency said.

Saturday’s vegetable gardening class was created for those who want to integrate edible plants, fruits and vegetables into their landscape while remaining water-wise and maintaining their curb appeal.

Steve Williams, a horticulture professor at Mt. San Antonio College, is scheduled to teach “Waterwise Vegetable Gardening,” bringing more than 10 years of experience as a plant propagator/nursery manager and botanical garden staff member.

Additionally, Williams has taught home gardening classes for 10 years and has had an affiliation with UCCE Master Gardeners since 1996, officials said.
