The first “true” AI, or artificial intelligence, hearing aid is now available at a Santa Clarita audiologist’s office, Nola Aronson’s Advanced Audiology, after the product was released last month.
“It’s so amazing,” Aronson said. “It not only tracks your steps, your heart rate — you will not have to use a Fitbit anymore — it measures your brain activity so you see how you’re doing in your listening environments and how your brain is functioning.”
The AI hearing aid was created by the only all American-made hearing aid manufacturer Starkey, and can measure hearing and brain activity, according to Aronson.
“If you have a hearing loss and you miss so much information over time, you’re more prone to getting Alzheimer’s and dementia,” she said. “So now through this hearing aid, you’re able to measure that involvement of how you listen (in) all kinds of listening environments you’re in.”
The AI hearing aid also stands apart from other hearing aids with its revolutionary ability to provide language translations.
“It will tell you in your ear what the person is saying,” Aronson said, adding that the only requirement for these innovative features is a smartphone app.
But the most important part about the AI hearing aid is the unparalleled sound quality it provides compared to more standard hearing aids, Aronson noted.
“I put a pair on because I wanted to hear the translation of the languages,” she said. “It was so clear and crisp… I can’t even hear the cars in the background because it’s not paying attention to all the noise. It doesn’t have a lot of the circuit noise and the distortion, it has clarity.”
Aronson is also able to make adjustments to the AI hearing aid from her office without the patient needing to come in, which allowed her to take care of a patient whom she has seen since he was a child even after he grew up and moved away.
“It has Telehealth built into it, so with a code, he hooks up to my computer and now, from Pismo Beach, if he’s having a problem with his hearing aid, I can adjust it from my computer,” Aronson said. “He wrote me on Instant Messenger last night (about) how thankful he is, that these are the best pair of hearing aids he’s ever had and that he thanks me for taking such good care of him all his life.”
Aronson continued, “As I get older and I’m thinking about, well it’s getting time to retire, but with all this great new technology, it’s so exciting for me because I actually am changing people’s lives and giving them back their quality of life. I don’t think I will retire anytime soon now… I’m finally doing what I’ve dreamed about doing for so many years, and that’s really helping people.”
The community is encouraged to “stay tuned” for the next open house at Advanced Audiology with a representative from the manufacturer on Oct. 30 and 31, where those in attendance can take what Aronson called a no-obligation “test drive” in their own environment and “hear for yourself.”
Advanced Audiology was founded in 2010 by Santa Clarita audiologist Nola Aronson, who has been fitting hearing aids for more than 30 years. Advanced Audiology is the largest diagnostic hearing center in the Santa Clarita Valley, focusing on clients with hearing loss, tinnitus, ears ringing and more. Hearing tests, hearing aids and new sound infrared devices are also available at Advanced Audiology in addition to a complete hearing healthcare program that includes free batteries, quarterly cleanings and adjustments.
