City of Hope scientists are also helping to develop new treatments related to complications to diabetes. They are a national leader in islet cell transplantation, which transfers cells from an organ donor into the body of another person. The transplanted islet cells can take over the work of the destroyed cells to make insulin. Although it is an experimental treatment, it has the potential to reverse type 1 diabetes.
As a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, which advances research and treatment protocols throughout the nation, City of Hope is recognized as as one of 49 designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation by the National Cancer Institute. They have also been ranked as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in cancer for more than a decade by U.S.News & World Report.
