Every year two million books are thrown away, and Project Books, Inc. is an organization who wishes to change this statistic. Founded in 2010, Project Books, Inc. has been doing everything they can to provide those in need or limited resources with the gift of reading through book donations.
They accept donations from everybody, including individual people, businesses, private companies, and other organizations, such as the SCV Education Foundation, Golden Valley High School, and KHTS, all of them helping spread the word and increase donations.
Though based in Santa Clarita, Project Books helps provide books to as much of the Los Angeles County as they can. In 2010, founder Marcia Decker was leaving work from a library amidst a renovation, and found a dumpster full of books. Rather than deal with storage and organization amidst the library’s restoration, they opted to just toss them all. Noting the huge waste in these books sitting in a dumpster, Decker was inspired, rescued all of the books from the trash, and fought to put them in the eager hands of readers.
Book Donations in Santa Clarita
Thanks to the help provided by the legal clinic at USC, Project Books, Inc. became a tax-exempt status and became an official non-profit organization, leading to any and all books to become tax-deductible. Some of the many locations that Project Books provides books to are homeless shelters, Veterans Association hospitals, senior centers, the Newhall Community Center, and more.
Though books of all genres are welcomed as donations, children’s picture books are especially so to help promote literacy at young ages. In fighting from books becoming wasteful and unused, Project Books is dedicated to spreading all reading materials donated to those who cannot afford them throughout the communities of Los Angeles County. They endorse calling to schedule for free pickups and deliveries in Santa Clarita as well as other communities such as the Palmdale and Lancaster areas in the hopes of spreading the joy of books and reading.
