Los Angeles County Emergency Services

Los Angeles County Emergency Services is there to provide all Santa Clarita Valley and Los Angeles County residents with medical assistance when needed. In addition to ambulance services, the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the entirety of the local EMS system. Duties include establishing policies, addressing the financial aspects of system operation, and making provisions for collection, analysis, and dissemination of EMS related data. In addition, the EMS Agency is responsible for establishing operational policies and procedures; designating EMS base hospitals and specialty care centers, such as trauma centers; developing guidelines, standards and protocols for patient treatment and transfer; implementing a prehospital ALS program; certifying and accrediting prehospital medical care personnel; and approving EMS personnel training programs.

Los Angeles County Has One Of The Largest Emergency Service Systems In The United States

Cathy Chidester is the current director of the agency, and William Koenig is the medical director. Both professionals have decades of experience working in emergency medicine, and have seen the specialty evolve to become a thriving field, attracting professionals committed to a life of service in health care. The Agency is dedicated to being on the cutting edge of technology and industry standards in order to provide the highest quality of life for patients and support for all personnel within its jurisdiction.

Los Angeles County has one of the largest EMS systems in the United States, and is known nationally and worldwide as a leader in prehospital care. The system relies on the skills and talents of over 18,000 certified EMS personnel employed by fire departments, law enforcement, ambulance companies, hospitals and private organizations to provide round-the-clock lifesaving care. The agency works with the Los Angeles Department of Health Services (DHS) to address a variety of health-related needs and situations. DHS provides emergency care, primary care, inpatient care, specialty care, urgent care, and rehabilitation. The department also offers women’s health services, pediatrics, HIV/AIDS care, as well as adult and family medicine to residents of the SCV and surrounding area.

The Los Angeles County Emergency Services system was one of the first to be developed. Its foundation was established in 1966, which saw the release of groundbreaking studies and national legislation that informed the evolution of health care services around the world. Today, Los Angeles County Emergency Services provides unparalleled prehospital care to members of the Santa Clarita Valley and residents of Southern California.
