Santa Clarita Audiologist Nola Aronson Speaks About How Far Hearing Aid Technology Has Come

Santa Clarita Audiologist Nola Aronson describes how hearing aids have changed over the years, becoming customizable and less noticeable.

“First of all, most people that have hearing problems, dont want to admit that they have a hearing problem,” Aronson explained. “The thing is, there is such a big misconception about hearing aids. In the old days only ‘old people’ got hearing aids, (and) they were big and they were bulky.”

In Aronson’s experience, many people will go into the hearing screening in denial about the level of hearing loss they are experiencing. She believes this is due to the stigma in their minds about hearing aids.

“People go, ‘Oh no, my hearing is just fine,’ and then the spouse is saying, ‘No it’s not,’” she said. “The real reason is because they have this preconceived idea in their head what hearing devices look like.”

Most people don’t realize that hearing aids are not what they used to be, and can now be customized to match people’s hair or their favorite color, having also reduced in size.

“Nowadays you cannot see them at all, and plus they come in different colors, so you can even have fun with them so that they match your hair,” Aronson said. “Some people’s favorite color is purple, like me, and they get purple hearing aids.”

To better explain how unnoticeable hearing aids have become, Aronson mentions her husband who wears a hearing aid. Her husband is bald and people are always surprised to learn that he wears a hearing aid.

“I have a lot of people who are bald. My own husband doesn’t have much hair and he has an 85 percent hearing loss, and he goes out and visits all the doctors and not one person ever says, ‘Oh you wear a hearing aid?’” Aronson said.

Aronson argues that if the fear of looking “old” is what is stopping people from wearing a hearing aid, not getting one will make you look older, because you cannot hear anything.

“If you don’t want to look old and you have a hearing loss, then you better get a hearing device,” she said. “What people don’t realize is they do notice when you don’t wear them, so your hearing loss is more conspicuous than any hearing aid.”
