Married Couples Arguing About ‘Selective Hearing’ Can Settle Their Feud With Free Hearing Screenings At Advanced Audiology

Santa Clarita Audiologist Nola Aronson

For married couples who argue about what appears to be “selective hearing,” a Santa Clarita audiologist is offering to help settle the matter with free hearing screenings for both.

“Right now we’re doing an ad: Does your spouse have selective hearing? Let’s end the debate now — both of you come in for a free hearing check-up and that way you’ll both know and you don’t have to argue anymore. So we save marriages too,” said Nola Aronson of Advanced Audiology with a laugh.

These free hearing screenings are for all Santa Clarita Valley residents in addition to feuding married couples, and aren’t just for those who have noticed hearing problems, according to Aronson.

“You get your eyes checked, you get your teeth checked, you get your heart checked. Why aren’t we checking hearing?” she said. ‘“Hearing is the thing that keeps you in communication with other people.”

Aronson assured that routine free hearing screenings at Advanced Audiology are certainly not about selling hearing aids.

“That’s not our purpose,” she said. “Our purpose is to give you a solution to whatever your problem is, and to let you know where you’re at so when (hearing loss) does happen, you’re aware of it. Then you know what to do. (It’s) just a baseline.”

Hearing loss can often be subtle, particularly when in the high frequency range, which deals with the understanding of speech instead of actual volume.

For example, 80 percent of the English language is made up of letter combinations like “sh” or “ch” and letters like “t” and “s,” so mild hearing loss in the high frequency range can result in difficulty hearing these letters in words.

“You miss one letter in a word, then you don’t understand what is being said because you are still stuck figuring out the word you missed. Therefore you may not notice how many times you ask, ‘What?’, but the other person sure does,” Aronson explained. “So it’s fast, free and easy to get a hearing check-up and find out where you are at. You get your eyes, teeth and heart checked — why not your ears?”
