And there’s the latest info about fraud and alerts about current insurance-related scams to avoid.

Since you’ve already paid for them via your state tax dollars, California Department of Insurance services are available at no additional cost to consumers or brokers.

The California Department of Insurance was established in 1868, as new national regulations mandated state-based insurance regulations as well.

Consumer protection has been the department’s core mission since the outset. Today, the department is the state’s largest consumer protection agency.

Not surprisingly, California is the United States’ largest insurance market, and the six largest in the world. The California Department of Insurance oversees annual direct premiums amounting to nearly $290 billion each year.

Department functions include enforcing insurers to be financially viable, issuing licenses to insurance agents and brokers, reviewing insurer and broker conduct in the marketplace, addressing complaints from consumers, and fighting insurance fraud through investigations and prosecutions.

Almost 1,400 California Department of Insurance employees keep tabs on more than 1,300 insurance companies, and process license applications from 400,000 insurance agents, brokers, adjusters and businesses each year.

That adds up to some 8,000 rate applications, 190,000 applications for new or renewed licenses, and hundreds of reviews of insurer conduct in the California insurance marketplace.

The California Department of Insurance fields more than 170,000 calls each year from consumers requesting assistance to resolve an issue with an insurer or broker.

By following up on more than 37,000 consumer complaints, the department manages to recover more than $84 million a year for California insurance consumers.

Fighting insurance fraud is key to the California Department of Insurance’s mission to protect consumers. Each year, the department receives and investigates tens of thousands of complaints from consumers about suspected or obvious fraud by insurers and others. And each year, such investigations lead to thousands of arrests.
