Creating a number of different wooden designs and crafts, Handcrafted by Charlie has been providing handmade furniture, accessories, and crafts for the Santa Clarita Valley for years. Literally built up from the ground, Handcrafted by Charlie is run by craftsman Charlie Hulien, who has decades’ worth of hands-on experience, and has recently taken to creating a fun and relaxing hobby into a business.
Working through his retirement, Charlie has taken to building custom orders for many different home furnishings as well as home living accessories. Charlie has built everything necessary for home living like bed frames, dressers, and cabinets. He has also crafted some toys and objects friendly for children of all ages and sizes. One of his most popular and signature crafts is the Child Growth Ruler. Rather than permanently painting a ruler onto the wall, Charlie’s rulers offer a keepsake for families to take should they ever move. Made out of the most durable wood, Charlie cuts the rulers to a length of about six feet. Instead of simply painting on dashes for each ruler, Charlie uses his router to carve actual indentations into the ruler for every inch and foot mark. He also uses real vinyl numbers instead of using stencils to spray paint on the foot mark numbers. Charlie’s rulers are also to fit any inscription a family wishes to have placed on their ruler. Each ruler is a real process, but Charlie takes his time and is happy to work through each step of the construction.
Charlie has also designed and built a number of outdoor decor and crafts. Along with building sleek and glossy picnic tables and stools, Charlie has also built benches and even decks for outdoor hot tubs. Dipping into the art forms of his craft, Charlie has built a number of decorative and artfully crafted mushrooms to brighten any Santa Clarita lawn.
With his workshop located in his Valencia home, Charlie is more than happy to take orders for any particular piece of furniture or craft that are of interest. His works are also available for sale during a number of different community events throughout Santa Clarita.
